Workshop Description:

This highly experiential and playful one-day workshop will provide participants with practical tools for introducing drama and action techniques into their clinical work with hard to reach adolescents.

Adolescents can be challenging, bringing endless amounts of life “drama” into the therapist’s office. We will explore how drama therapy and action based techniques can successfully harness this energy and reinforce positive self-expression.

Through experiential methods participants will embody and explore issues central to the adolescent experience, common transference dynamics between client and therapist and concrete obstacles participants experience in their day-to-day work. Bringing elements of humor and playfulness into the therapy space in order to gain new perspective for both client and therapist will be emphasized.

Specific techniques proven to be effective in engaging adolescents will be demonstrated, such as the use of video making, mask and monologue work, structured and improvisational theatre games and story work.

Participants will gain:

•    Knowledge and experiential understanding of developmental and emotional issues central to the adolescent experience.

•    Perspective on how to playfully navigate transference dynamics that commonly exist between resistant teens and clinicians.

•    Practical and concrete tools to incorporate in their work.

•    Information and tips on utilizing drama in conjunction with other artistic and expressive approaches.
