Location:  The Drama League of New York, 32 Avenue of the Americas, NYC
Fee: $90

Are you a clinician who is interested in supporting clients in deepening their mind-body connections? This 3.0 CE course will demonstrate how to include the body in the clinical relationship in a safe, effective and ethical manner. This course is designed to introduce to therapists of other disciplines the basic principles and techniques used by licensed dance/movement therapists.

As a therapist, do you want to know more about your own mind-body experience during therapy sessions? This workshop will explore skills to help inform the clinician on how to make the most effective verbal and non verbal interventions.

Description of course activity content: This course will examine how to effectively and thoughtfully incorporate movement and kinesthetic attunement into individual and group therapy practice, with particular emphasis on the clinician's use of their own experience sharing space with their client in a fully embodied and present state. Participants will be introduced to responsible techniques based on the theories and principles practiced by licensed and trained dance movement therapists. Discussion will include an overview of dance/movement therapy history and theory, including New York State licensing, national certification and scope of practice guidelines.

This experientially based training will give practitioners practical tools for incorporating dance and movement in the therapy space. We will be on our feet and moving in this training. We will practice movement interventions that can be incorporated into sessions with clients. Additional activities will highlight awareness of the clinician’s personal experience using movement as a tool for increased awareness.

A description of the teaching methods to be used:

  • Lecture and discussion to introduce dance/movement therapy theory.
  • Role-play dyads of ‘therapist-client’ to practice activities and demonstrate the application of theory.
  • Group discussion of role-play experiences and impressions of activities to enhance learning and to gain perspective on the varied subjective experiences of group participants and to identify resistances that clients may experience when asked to complete tasks in a group setting.

The learning objectives of the course. Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the possibilities and limitations for the use of the movement and dance in therapy for mental health professionals who are not licensed as creative arts therapists.
  2. Identify three specific techniques that psychotherapists can use in their practice.
  3. Learn how to increase the clincian's awareness of their own mind-body experience during sessions.
  4. Describe how countertransference and nonverbal communication can be used to enhance the therapist-client relationship in service of treatment goals.
